Schistosomiasis and bladder cancer

Schistosoma haematobium is a parasitic flatworm with an established relationship to bladder cancer.

The National Cancer Institute notes that people acquire the infection through contact with contaminated fresh water in endemic areas and that antiparasitic drugs are used to treat the infection.

Treating an infection and treating an established cancer are different clinical questions. Anyone concerned about either should discuss diagnosis and treatment with qualified clinicians.
